Fad Diets Definition - What are they?

All of us have heard, at one time or another, of the phrase "A fad diet". But what exactly constitutes a "fad diet" and why are they seen in such a negative light?

Fad Diets Definition - What are they?

Essential elements of a fad diet.

Essentially a fad diet is an unsanctioned diet program that promises dramatic short-term weight loss results. In short, they make promises that are too good to be true. Moreover, because they offer such fantastic short-term results, many weight-loss experts see them as being potentially more harmful than not going on a diet at all: as weight loss is not sustained over a long-term period, meaning that those on the program allow their body weight to dangerously yo-yo from one extreme to another.
How do I know if the diet I'm on is a fad diet?

Almost You'll certainly be on a fad diet if your diet program offers any of the following:

  • Quick weight loss
  • Lack of any real fitness program, as part of its weight-loss program
  • Immediate weight loss promises that no other diet can match
  • Insist that you eat certain food types, whilst restricting other types of food on the grounds that such food types are the "cause" of your weight problems
  • Promote their weight loss program by telling you how successful other participants of the program have been, especially over a Short-term period
  • Promotes its weight loss program by telling you not to eating carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals, and other essential food-groups - abstinence of which may cause long-term health problems
  • The program does not address the issue of long-term weight loss
  • Requires that you spend money on such fabulous diet cures as pills, motivational seminars and designer meals to help you attain those fantastic weight loss results. If fad diets are not good for you, why are there so many of them?

A very good question is why are fad diets so (financially) successful? The truth is that fad diets are usually successful among those in a vulnerable group of society who are desperate to attain weight loss, but who should see immediate results - they're not willing to stretch out their weight loss program over a long-term period.

They need to see instant results! In such circumstances, fad diet organizations have built a tremendous network of marketing campaigns to let people know of the success of its program. But, as with most network marketing, the "real" results are often fudged, disguised, or just plain, not made available. Yes, there are successes, but the chances you'll be one of them are remote.

So, If a fad diet doesn't work: What is the best way to lose weight?
